New York City Public School Admission Changes

The “TLDR” of the new middle and high school admissions process and what it means for your child.

One thing we can count on in the ever-changing rules of the New York City public school admissions process, is change itself! This year is no different.

A few weeks ago, city officials announced public middle and high school admissions changes for this year. Their goal is to “remove historic limits on families in application processes.” In short, these changes were made to increase school choice in New York City and simplify the admissions process. Here is what you need to know about the new system and how it will impact you, and your child’s middle or high school application.

Middle School Admissions:

The Change:

Families can now apply to any middle school in New York City regardless of zone, district, or borough.

How is this different?

Previously, some district middle school programs were only open to students who live in or attend elementary school in the school’s district, or (in some cases) the school’s zone.

Who does this change impact?

Depending on your exact address and types of schools you are interested in, this change may not impact you much. However, if you live on the border of multiple school districts, or on the edge of a district, you can now apply to all schools regardless of the district you live in. In other words, you can apply to schools that may still be in your “neighborhood,” but were previously outside of your district.

Does this increase or decrease my chances of getting into my top choice schools?

School lottery systems will still prioritize district residence when admitting students, and will only open up spots to out of district students if space allows. Therefore, high demand middle schools will likely remain competitive and maintain similar student body compositions.

What about screened schools?

Some middle schools admit students based on extra criteria, such as auditions or academic screens. The new policy only mandates that schools become available to all residents of New York City, but the change does not directly impact screened admissions policies.

And citywide schools?

Similarly, this change does not mandate any changes in admissions policies for schools that were already citywide (open to applicants from any district or borough).

High School Admissions

The change:

Families can now apply to any number of public high schools. Previously, the MySchools application was limited to 12 schools (this does not include specialized high schools or audition-based schools). Furthermore, there is a new digital tool available in the portal that helps you calculate your chances of being admitted to high school programs.

How does this change impact me?

It likely doesn’t! You can still apply to only 12 schools if you wish! The prediction tool will, however, likely inform which schools you prioritize.

We know these changes may seem confusing! But as we always say, the most important thing throughout this process is to stay calm and keep informed.
